I came across all sorts of tweets and blog posts today proclaiming that today, June 30, 2010, is Social Media Day. Well, Happy Social Media Day. But, I must ask… WHY is today Social 
Media Day?
I had to search just a little, and my first guess was right – Mashable(the social media and tech blog/resource) is at the root of this phenomenon. Earlier this month they asked people to join them in celebrating Social Media Day because they haven’t heard of any such official days.
“Social media has changed our lives. It has not only changed the way we communicate, but the way we connect with one another, consume our news, conduct our work, organize our lives, and much more. So why not celebrate?” the blog post from earlier this month says.
So Mashable encouraged people in cities across the nation to host social meetups. Sorry, if I had known earlier, I would have organized one for Viroqua.
